Walton-on-the-Naze Concrete Barge sent in by John Flanagan who writes:
'They are mentioned in the book "East Anglia at War" as fuel supply barges "once part of the D Day convoy" but that is all. There are three in all...2 of them are sited on the banks of the back waters at the north west corner of the Naze Marine holiday park, the 3rd is further down stream towards the town and on the far bank and has fishing gear stored on it. The one pictured next is now firmly part of the river bank and is listing at a sharp angle (I seem to remember it was level in 1972).. its hatches have been filled in with concrete now but in the 70s they were still open and me and my cousin once mounted an expedition to lower one of us inside on a rope !.. The rope broke before we even got there and that was that..prob just as well as one of us would prob still be there now ! When ever we go to Walton I have to make a pilgrimage to see how the old girls are doing..its sort of become a family tradition. If any one has any info on what they were used for, did they have any thing original built on them like a wheelhouse affair or even how they got there i would be most interested.'
